Supporting Autism Hour
6th October 2018
Retailers and businesses from Staines-Upon-Thames’ Town will be uniting to support this
years’ Autism Hour, taking place on Saturday 6th
Autism is a lifelong disability that affects how people
communicate and interact with the world with many autistic people and their
families often finding shopping over-whelming.
As part of The National Autistic Society’s Autism Hour, from 9am
-10am, retailers from Two Rivers Shopping Centre will be making small
autism-friendly changes. Stores including Ann
Summers, The Entertainer, McDonalds and Vue Cinema Centre will be turning down their sound stystems and
drimming bright lights to create an autism friendly environment. Burrells will also be participating by
turning off their music in store.
There are approximately 700,000 autistic adults and children in
the UK and without the right understanding or support, many autistic people and
their families say they avoid going to the shops. The bright lights, loud
noises and a lack of understanding may leave many autistic people feeling
overwhelmed and isolated.
